On our drive back from Oregon, this is what we drove by, a frozen Klamath Lake. It was beautiful, and huge. I can see why people are tempted to go out on lakes even if they aren't sure that they're completely frozen.

Snow in Berkeley
I didn't have my camera the first day, but this is snow in Tilden the day after it snowed. The first day there was so much snow, it was like driving through Tahoe in the middle of ski season. I wish I'd had my camera on me...

Christmas Train
A slightly fuzzy picture of the cake that Amanda & Peter made to start off the holiday season. The ensemble covered their entire coffee table (and I'm told it tasted pretty good after the fact, too!).

Cy with a Cold
Cy's teething, and he has a cold. It's the only time I've ever seen him grumpy for longer than a few minutes. Poor little guy. But he's still cute.

Houston Airport Napping
This is what happens when massive thunderstorms hit Houston right after the first leg of your flight lands. You spend all night in the airport with a bunch of other people who can't take a shower or brush their teeth, just like you can't. The cool thing about it? The Houston Airport does have a Peet's!

NY Wedding
Steph & Tony had a party to celebrate their wedding. Lots of great people, good food, and a long overdue trip to New York.

Local Lunch
Kate & Jess & I made a magnificent lunch, all with local ingredients from the farmer's market at Union Square (the New York one). It was scrumptious!

M & M Store
Can you believe New York has a three story M & M Store? Jessica brought me, just to prove that it really existed (OK, and we bought some M & Ms too). It was unreal.

Cypress Airlines
Cy's latest trick, the airplane move. He's also learned to click his tongue. Still no crawling, but he's getting there. And he likes to take baths in the kitchen sink, where he can drink straight out of the water filter faucet. Such a cute nephew I have.

Chihuly Boat
I went to see three exhibits today, including one on Chihuly's glass work. This boat was about 15 feet long and full of all of these amazing shapes. The other two exhibits were Frida Kahlo and a female impressionists exhibit. All three were amazing, and completely different. It was a lovely way to spend a day off.

OMG Zucchini
So, my Dad comes over tonight, and when I answer the door he's got something behind his back. He gives me this line about how he's been worried ever since I moved into this neighborhood so he brought me something to use for protection. Then he pulls out a HUGE zucchini. 1.642 kg (that's 3.62 pounds).
Update: half the zucchini has been stuffed (with farro, corn, pine nuts, garlic, shallot, dill, and an egg), a quarter turned into two loaves of zucchini bread, and a quarter remains in the fridge. Suggestions?

Raspberry Sherbert
This time it was vegan raspberry sherbert, from a recipe I adapted from The Perfect Scoop. I used a blend of soy milk and soy creamer. I also opted to put some of it in individual glass cups to freeze, which worked well. It was a bit difficult to scoop the last batch out of the big glass pyrex bowl.

Vegan Ice Cream
One of my birthday gifts was a gift certificate to a kitchen store, which gave me the perfect excuse to buy an ice cream maker attachment/bowl for my KitchenAid. Another Isa Chandra Moscowitz miracle has been brought to life. Strawberry Chocolate Chip Vegan Ice Cream. This could be dangerous. Very, very dangerous.
Fig with a View
I took some of my market finds, including a bag of figs, out to Land's End along with a book. I landed up chatting with a friend on the phone for about an hour while enjoying the view and the glory that is fresh, ripe, juicy figs. The book (which shall remain nameless) was for my book club, and I wasn't really enjoying it anyways. The figs were another story.

Lentils & Flatbread
I made a lentil salad today off of Orangette, along with rosemary flatbread from Gourmet. Both were so good I had to have seconds. Thirds are being saved for lunch tomorrow. Yum.

NYT Choc Chip Cookies
Have you heard about these? They do have to sit in the fridge for 36 hours. I recommend leaving the house for the duration so you don't land up eating a whole bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough. Not that I would do that. Not me.

Lots o' Laundry
The dryers are broken. They still run, still eat my quarters, but don't get hot. Which is why I have four loads of laundry hanging around my apartment air drying. Better for the environment. That's my glass half full response to it all.

Birthday Karaoke
My annual shindig this year was even bigger and more entertaining than normal, as we combined it with a surprise 65 & 1/2 birthday party for Mom. In line with all of the festivities, we had karaoke downstairs. Kate, Amanda & I shared a rendition of...something from the 80's...don't remember what, but it was fun!

This is Traffic Court?
I mistakenly thought that I had to actually go to traffic court this morning, when I could have just mailed in my ticket with a check. Gee, thanks. So instead of sleeping in on my day off, I landed up in the middle of Oakland with some time to kill before I could pick up Amanda. I found a little cafe and ordered breakfast. Should have asked a little more, as the beautiful toast sandwiched both cheese and ham, but I scraped it off and made a half-sandwich to take to Amanda and enjoyed the rest of it.

Opera at the Ballpark
My friend Richard and I went to Opera in the Ballpark tonight. We, and several thousand other people, saw Lucia di Lammermoor. It was interesting to see a full length opera simulcast on a scoreboard. I was impressed by the number of people, and the opera was quite good. Not to mention, when's the last time you got to watch a Donizetti while eating garlic fries?

Vegan Pizza
You'd think that vegan pizza would be dull. Kind of like what happens when you ask a regular pizza place to do a veggie pizza with no cheese. Does not go well, in my humble experience. However, as she has shown before, Isa Chandra Moscowitz of Post Punk Kitchen fame knows her stuff. I made "Isa Pizza" with vegan walnut pesto and tofu basil "ricotta." It was stunningly good. I can honestly say that I didn't miss the cheese. And I do miss cheese, frequently.

City Ramblings
This afternoon Amanda, Peter, Mom, Dad & I went to the Cable Car Museum in the City. I hadn't realized that all of the cable cars come through one garage and all run on the same set of cables (well, one for each line). These are the California & Mason lines. Then we went on a Ghost Hunt, which did not produce any ghosts but was well worth the tour guide, the other happenings, and all of the great stories and history.

Chihuly Teaser
Laurel & I went to the Annie Liebowitz exhibit at the Legion of Honor, and outside they had this teaser piece for the Chihuly exhibit that's coming to the DeYoung in June. Try to keep in mind that this thing is 14 feet in diameter. I can't wait to see the full fledged exhibit.

Toy Story?
The window display in a toy store on College Ave in Berkeley. Notice the banner hanging from the Golden Gate Bridge? I love where I live.

Mother's Day Goodies
Amanda brought me flowers, chocolate (dairy free, of course) and a Cal reusable shopping bag! She obviously knows the way to her mother's heart.

Solid Food?
Mom was trying to get Cy to look at the camera by getting him to follow the spoon (with chocolate sauce on it no less). I think he was more interested in the food. Not a big surprise given what a good eater he is, except when you realize he's only three and a half months old and has never had anything besides breast milk. Something tells me he won't have a problem switching over to solid food.

Retreat
I spent the weekend at a beautiful yoga retreat in the hills above Guerneville. My teacher Carolyn lead a dozen of us through a weekend full of yoga, meditation, deep relaxation, and rest. In the mornings we would practice silence during a guided meditation and breakfast, not talking until we had our first yoga class after breakfast. Afternoons were vigorous classes followed by a break, dinner, and more meditation. It was amazing, I wish I could do it for a month or maybe longer.

On My Way From Work - Best Of
This afternoon on the way to the car I came across this guy (girl?) sitting in the middle of the road. He/she didn't seem too bothered by my presence, and was in no hurry to leave the sunny warm asphalt. I'm guessing it was a gopher snake, about 16 inches long. Cute little bugger.

Knitting with Lambs
Dana had a bunch of us over at the house where her family keeps their sheep and two small lambs. It turns out that Dan (not Dana) always wanted to be a sheep farmer, and was quite good at corralling the lambs and picking them up. They were less than thrilled, but they tolerated it. We spent the rest of the afternoon knitting & noshing, along with four beagles and Dana's three big rescue dogs.

Ian and Amy's son Riley is due soon. His blankie is made from Blue Sky Organic Cotton. Had to do something besides a hat for a change of pace.

Gryffen's Sweater
Yep, another boy. This time he's my cousin! Keren & Jill's little one was born earlier this week. Hope he likes his new duds. Made from the amazing Baby Surprise Jacket pattern.

Icecream Hat
Finally, a baby girl to compete with all the baby boy's! Maia, from work, is due soon. And no, that's not a typo, her name is Maia too.

Cupcake Tower
I made cupcakes for Eric and Margaret's wedding. There were four flavors: green tea, lemon buttermilk, hazelnut with chocolate mousse filling, and apricot almond. Three of the recipes were from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, the best cupcake cookbook of all time.

Boston Rhino
We had the afternoon off before heading back home from our conference in Boston. I elected to head over to my favorite Boston museum, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a beautiful old home full of all kinds of art from her life of collecting. You can't take pictures inside, but on my way over I ran into this guy. Cute, isn't he?

Mike's Goodness
Apparently everyone who lives in Boston, visits Boston, has a vague connection with Boston loves Mike's Pastry. It's in the North End, and there always seems to be a line out the door. It helps that they have great baked goods, and the distinctive blue & white boxes tied with twine that you carry out are a pretty good marketing scheme. I couldn't resist, although I'm pretty sure Mike eschews butter-less baking.

Asterix's Garden
At the Home & Garden Show this year, one of the mini-gardens put together by local grade schoolers featured three of my favorite comic characters of all time: Asterix, Obelix, and Dogmatix. A must read for all lovers of comics, ancient history, and pun after pun after pun.

Floral Penguins
The Bouquet d'Artes is one of my favorite events every year, and this year was no exception. It was at the DeYoung, as it has been the past few years. There were several arrangements that really caught my eye, but we almost missed this one tucked away in the hall going out to the parking garage. Aren't they marvelous?

Cy & Auntie Maia
Dinner with Chris, Bray & Cy at Rex's apartment in Oakland. He has the most amazing view of the lake. Cy slept through most of the evening. Chris says it's because Rex was playing Reggae.
